Medical training is something that never stops. Continuous innovation and research make it necessary for medical professionals to dedicate part of their time to maintaining and improving their professional competence, to adapt to the new demands and requirements that are generated by the evolution of medicine, the health system and society in general. Precisely thinking of helping in this continuous medical training, the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona created grants in the 1980s to carry out this training in centres of excellence abroad, the ‘Sabàtics Permits’. Later, in 2015, barnaclínic+ joined this initiative allowing more training time to be financed.

Kidney stones are a disease that consist of the formation of calcium or stones in the kidneys or the urinary tracts. When this calcium is small, it’s possible for the patient to extract them naturally. But when they exceed a certain size, it’s suitable to carry out a medical-surgical treatment, as they can get stuck in the urinary tracts during their expulsion, blocking the flow of urine and causing great pain and complications. By betting on innovation, something that characterises the Hospital Clínic Group, the centre has incorporated into its services a novel technique for the treatment of kidney stones. This way, it has become the first hospital in Spain and the south of Europe to use and thereby improve the results of kidney stone extraction with the current Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy or NLP.

Skin cancer is the most frequent tumour and it is estimated that 20% of people will develop it throughout their lives. In Spain alone, this disease affects 300 people out of 100.000 each year. Malignant melanoma, on the other hand, is a tumour that is caused by an abnormal growth of some skin cells, whose incidence in recent years is possibly increasing in relation to sun exposure habits. Because these skin tumours appear externally, they are easier to detect and if they are diagnosed in the early stages, they have a high chance of cure. Due to this importance of early diagnosis, barnaclínic+ has launched its Dermatological Diagnosis Unit.
