El Clínic de Barcelona is once again one of the best hospitals in the world according to World’s Best Hospitals

What defines a great hospital as first class? Undoubtedly, exquisite care, pioneering research and being innovative are three major pillars of this question. But there is one more characteristic that these great centres share: consistency. The best hospitals in the world consistently attract the best professionals and deliver the best outcomes for patients, as well as offer new therapies and conduct important research. Doing this on an annual basis is no trivial matter. For the fifth time, Newsweek magazine, in collaboration with Statista, has compiled its ranking of the world’s best hospitals, the World’s  Best  Hospitals 2023. And for yet another year, the Clínic de Barcelona has been among the best in Spain and the world.

On this occasion, as in the previous edition, the Clínic took second place among the best hospitals in Spain, behind only the Hospital Universitario La Paz, while the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre completed the podium as the third centre. On the other hand, in the ranking of the best hospitals in the world, the Clínic of Barcelona has occupied the 62nd position.

HOW ARE THE BEST HOSPITALS IN THE WORLD CHOSEN?

The preparation of this ranking has taken into account that many centres are still recovering from the unprecedented pressure of the covid-19 pandemic. In the past year, they have had to cope with inflation and global financial uncertainty, rising costs, ageing populations and a medical workforce exhausted from fighting a pandemic. The ranking of the world’s best hospitals was based on the opinions of more than 80,000 healthcare experts, including doctors, managers and other healthcare professionals, as well as patient satisfaction and clinical indicators.

HOW MANY HOSPITALS HAVE BEEN ASSESSED?

This time, more than 2,300 hospitals from 28 countries were evaluated, with Taiwanese hospitals being added to the list for the first time. For the first time, the 250 hospitals included in the list have also been ranked, as in previous years only the first 150 hospitals were ranked in alphabetical order and thereafter in alphabetical order.

Another novelty is that for the first time, hospitals were surveyed on the status of implementation of their PROMs. PROMs are defined as standardised and validated questionnaires that patients complete to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life. The World’s  Best  Hospitals 2023 also includes new hospital quality metrics.

THE BEST HOSPITALS IN SPAIN

Spain, for its part, has managed to include up to thirteen centres among the top 250. The thirteen best hospitals in Spain. In addition to Hospital Universitario La Paz (53), Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (62) and Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre (72), the following hospitals have also been included among the best hospitals in the world: Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron (83), Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón (90), Clínica Universidad de Navarra (97), Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal (152), Hospital Universitario y Politécnico la Fe (205), Hospital Universitario Fundación Jiménez Díaz.
