El Clínic consolidates its leading position in robotic thoracic surgery

Cirugía Torácica robótica

The Thoracic Surgery Service of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona continues to consolidate its leading position in the application of different thoracic robotic surgery techniques. With more than 150 robotic surgeries performed last April, the Thoracic Surgery Service of the Hospital Clínic confirms its leadership and reference position in this speciality.

MOVING INTO THE FUTURE: ROBOTIC THORACIC SURGERY AT GRUPO CLÍNIC

Thoracic robotic surgery has become an increasingly popular therapeutic option at the Clínic. Through approaches such as VATS (video thoracoscopy) and URATS (uniportal robotic thoracic surgeries), the hospital seeks to offer patients the highest standards of care and the latest technological advances in thoracic surgery.

Dr Ricard Ramos, head of the thoracic surgery service at the Clínic and thoracic surgeon at barnaclinic+, highlights the importance of robotic surgery in medical practice: “Thoracic robotic surgery provides us with the latest technology to perform all types of surgery, which will allow us to tackle increasingly complex procedures with minimally invasive techniques. The idea is for robotics to be a tool that can be used by the entire team at the patient’s disposal”.

THE CLINIC AT THE FOREFRONT OF ALL THORACIC ROBOTIC SURGERY TECHNIQUES

VATS, used in more than 85% of lung resections for the treatment of lung cancer at the Clínic, is characterised by its minimally invasive approach. Through small incisions, both malignant and benign lung tumours can be removed. However, VATS has certain limitations, such as the lack of instrument articulation and two-dimensional vision.

In contrast, robotic thoracic surgery (RATS) offers greater precision and visibility during interventions. Thanks to its high-definition 3D vision and wide range of motion, RATS significantly improves surgical outcomes. In addition, it reduces pressure on the chest wall and intercostal nerves, resulting in reduced postoperative pain and faster recovery for patients.

THE LEAST INVASIVE ROBOTIC THORACIC SURGERY POSSIBLE

The Clínic stands out for performing conventional thoracic robotic  surgery as well as innovative techniques, such as URATS (uniportal robotic thoracic surgery). URATS is characterised by the use of a single entry port, which reduces invasiveness and improves surgical outcomes. This technique allows complex procedures with minimal incisions, resulting in faster recovery, less pain and fewer complications. In addition, URATS preserves lung function and improves aesthetics.

The Clínic continues to be at the forefront of medical innovation, offering advanced surgical techniques and leading the way to a future of precision and excellence in the treatment of thoracic diseases. All to provide patients with the highest standards of care and the best possible outcomes.
