Cancer is one of the most common diseases. The great advances in medicine in recent years have made it possible to improve the survival rate of this disease. However, it is still the leading cause of death in the world today. One of the decisive factors for a good prognosis is the stage of development of the tumour. Many cases can be cured if detected early and treated effectively. It is a problem that can affect between 20 and 50% of the adult population, affecting one in two men over the age of fifty. Despite being such a common disorder, it is still rare to talk about erectile dysfunction, on which an important social taboo still weighs. In this way, many men do not go to medical consultations to treat this problem, for which there are different types of treatment, the penile prosthesis being the last one when more conservative options have failed. It consists of placing a device inside the penis to try to optimise its rigidity when having sexual intercourse.

The Clínic reaches the milestone of 200 kidney transplants in one year
Clínic Barcelona is a reference centre in Catalonia and Spain in terms of kidney transplant. Proof of this is the new record achieved this November when the unit managed to reach 200 kidney transplants in one year. This figure, which represents a unique milestone in Catalonia, has been confirmed by the Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT) and has been achieved from the beginning of this year to the present.

Nine services of the Clínic are among the best in the world in the ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals’ of 2023
Newsweek magazine in collaboration with the statistical portal Statista Inc. publishes each year a ranking of the best hospitals in the world by speciality, the ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals 2023’. As usual, the Barcelona Clínic Group has stood out as one of the best hospitals in the world and our country, and has achieved outstanding positions in nine of the eleven categories that were analysed this year. The best-positioned department was Urology, led by Dr Antonio Alcaraz, who was also a novelty in this edition’s ranking. In this way, the Clinical Institute of Nephrology and Urology (ICNU) has achieved the 14th position in the ranking, also being the second-best service in Spain, only behind the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid.

A pioneering surgical technique in Europe allows reversing male infertility
Male infertility can be caused by multiple causes, among which there may be physical problems. In some cases, it is possible to solve these problems through surgery. The Urology Department of the Hospital Clínic Group, directed by Dr Antonio Alcaraz, is now a pioneer in Europe in carrying out a new surgical technique that allows for much more accurate procedures in these interventions and thus achieves a better recovery for the patient: the Micro Thesis or microsurgical retrieval of sperm assisted with the Olympus Orbeye exoscope.

Hospital Clínic is the first Spanish centre to perform 1,000 living donor kidney transplants
The Hospital Clínic is a reference centre in Spain when it comes to kidney transplants. On July 27, 1965, doctors Josep María Gil-Verat and Antoni Caralps completed the first kidney transplant in Spain. In all the time that has elapsed since then, 5,000 transplant operations have been carried out in the centre, of which 1,000 have been from a living donor, being the first centre in our country to achieve this figure. Some numbers that undoubtedly serve to highlight the transcendental role that the centre plays in our country with regard to kidney transplants.
