As is customary at this time, the results of the Health Reputation Monitor (MRS) have already been published, a ranking that Merco has been preparing for eight years. And for yet another year, the Clínic Barcelona has been one of the most outstanding centres, managing to position itself once again as the second-best public hospital in Spain and the first in Catalonia. It is the eighth consecutive year that the Clínic has achieved second place in the ranking. The best public hospital in Spain has once again been the Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid and the top three are completed by the Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón.

For another year, Newsweek magazine, in collaboration with Statista, has produced its ranking of the best hospitals in the world, the World’s Best Hospitals, thus being the fourth time that this classification has been awarded. And for yet another year, the Hospital Clínic has been among the best hospitals in the world and in Spain. On this occasion the centre has occupied the second position of the Spanish top 3, only behind the Hospital Universitario La Paz, while the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre completed the podium in third position. From the year 2001, Clarivate Analytics has published their ‘Highly Cited Researchers’ ranking. It’s a list which identifies the most influential researchers in the world and to form part of it you must find yourself among the 1% of most cited authors per field and year in the Web of Science. It’s one of the most prestigious classifications among the international academic and scientific community. And on this list of the best scientists in the world 2021 once again there are four professionals at barnaclínic+: Dr. Josep Dalmau, Dr. Ramon Estruch, Dr. Francesc Graus and Dr. Eduard Vieta.

The Hospital Clínic is a reference centre in Spain when it comes to kidney transplants. On July 27, 1965, doctors Josep María Gil-Verat and Antoni Caralps completed the first kidney transplant in Spain. In all the time that has elapsed since then, 5,000 transplant operations have been carried out in the centre, of which 1,000 have been from a living donor, being the first centre in our country to achieve this figure. Some numbers that undoubtedly serve to highlight the transcendental role that the centre plays in our country with regard to kidney transplants.

The AEMPS approves the use of a CAR-T therapy developed by the Hospital Clínic Group for the treatment of a type of leukaemia
In recent years, cancer treatment has been revolutionised by immunotherapy, an approach that uses a patient’s own immune system to attack tumour cells. The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) has just approved ARI-0001, a CAR T-cell therapy (a type of immunotherapy) developed entirely by the Hospital Clínic Group, for use as a medicinal product. This is the first time that a treatment with genetically modified cells developed entirely in Europe has been approved by a regulatory agency, and it is also the first time that it has been done without the backing of a pharmaceutical company.
