The best-positioned department was Urology, led by Dr Antonio Alcaraz, who was also a novelty in this edition’s ranking. In this way, the Clinical Institute of Nephrology and Urology (ICNU) has achieved the 14th position in the ranking, also being the second-best service in Spain, only behind the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid.

One of the big challenges in the treatment of cancer is its heterogeneity. Tumours can present different mutations and change with time, which means that not all treatments are effective or they generate resistance. That’s why it is important to carry out follow-ups that allow us to identify changes as they are produced. However, getting the precise samples to carry out this analysis via a tissue biopsy isn’t always easy. That’s why, in the last few years, a new method has been developed which allows to analyse tumoural DNA circulating in the blood in order to carry out this follow-up and analysis of cancer in an easy and simple way. This is known as liquid biopsy.

The AEMPS approves the use of a CAR-T therapy developed by the Hospital Clínic Group for the treatment of a type of leukaemia
In recent years, cancer treatment has been revolutionised by immunotherapy, an approach that uses a patient’s own immune system to attack tumour cells. The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) has just approved ARI-0001, a CAR T-cell therapy (a type of immunotherapy) developed entirely by the Hospital Clínic Group, for use as a medicinal product. This is the first time that a treatment with genetically modified cells developed entirely in Europe has been approved by a regulatory agency, and it is also the first time that it has been done without the backing of a pharmaceutical company.
