    New laser treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy

    The Hospital Clínic Group has recently acquired new interstitial laser equipment for its Epilepsy Unit. This minimally invasive technology can be used, among other things, to treat those types of epilepsy that do not respond to conventional pharmacological treatments and which account for 30% of all patients with epilepsy.

    The AEMPS approves the use of a CAR-T therapy developed by the Hospital Clínic Group for the treatment of a type of leukaemia

    In recent years, cancer treatment has been revolutionised by immunotherapy, an approach that uses a patient’s own immune system to attack tumour cells. The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) has just approved ARI-0001, a CAR T-cell therapy (a type of immunotherapy) developed entirely by the Hospital Clínic Group, for use as a medicinal product. This is the first time that a treatment with genetically modified cells developed entirely in Europe has been approved by a regulatory agency, and it is also the first time that it has been done without the backing of a pharmaceutical company.

    A new molecular test detects genetic abnormalities in tumours and improves customised cancer diagnosis and treatment

    At the Grupo Hospital Clínic, we have a new option for diagnosis of advanced cancer. It is a new test using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology which, by analysing the tumour’s DNA and RNA, detects multiple genetic abnormalities in 52 of your genes. This new cancer diagnostic test allows your treatment to be further customised. In addition, it improves current tests for the diagnosis of lung, colon and rectal cancer and melanoma.

    New ophthalmology surgical area of the Hospital Clínic Group

    On December the 10th, the new surgical area of the Clinical Institute of Ophthalmology (ICOF), of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona Group, was inaugurated. These are facilities that have the latest technology in this speciality and allow highly complex surgical treatments; with better results, greater precision and better post-operative services. In addition, with the construction of the Eye Training Centre Clinic, the Ophthalmology Service will combine surgical, educational and training activities in a single space.

    Hospital Clínic performs the first uterus transplant in Spain

    On October 5th, a multidisciplinary team from the Hospital Clínic Group performed the first uterus transplant in Spain. The surgery was led by Dr. Francisco Carmona, head of the Gynecology Service at the Hospital Clínic and gynecological surgeon at barnaclínic+, and Dr. Antonio Alcaraz, head of the Urology and Kidney Transplant Service at the Clínic and urological and transplant surgeon at barnaclínic+ . This first live donor uterus transplant from Spain has been possible thanks to the donation of this organ from one sister to another, who was born without it, and which is known as Rokitansky Syndrome.

The Clinical Cardiovascular Institute (ICCV), led by Dr. Marta Sitges, the Clinical Institute of Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (ICMDM), directed by Dr. Josep Vidal, and the Institute of Hemato-oncological Diseases (ICMHO), with Dr. Álvaro Urbano-Ispizua at the helm, are among the best in the world in their respective specialities according to the list produced annually by Newsweek magazine.

    Dr. Fernández-Valencia performs hip replacement surgery without hospitalisation for the first time in Spain

    Hospital Clínic de Barcelona has performed, for the first time in Spain, a hip replacement surgery without the need for hospitalisation. Although in recent years it had been possible to cut the hospitalisation time in half (from 7 days to 3.5 days), the operation had not been possible without hospitalising the patient. The intervention was carried out by Dr. Jenaro Fernández-Valencia, from the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service and Head of the Hip Section of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and barnaclínic+. The patient was operated on more than 2 months ago (on July 7th) and has not presented any complications. Read more…

    Hospital Clinic, the only hospital to perform robotic cardiovascular surgery in Spain

    Hospital Clínic de Barcelona is the only center in Spain that has begun to perform robotic cardiovascular surgeries with the Da Vinci robot. Doctors Daniel Pereda and Elena Sandoval, from the Clínic Cardiovascular Institute, have so far performed 14 interventions with this technique, all of them successful. Most of these interventions were mitral valve repair surgeries. However, this type of intervention offers numerous benefits in the treatment of multiple cardiac pathologies, as stated by Dr. Daniel Pereda, surgeon of the Clinic and barnaclínic+.
