The thoracic surgery team begins training in uniportal robotic surgery for international professionals

Cirugía torácica robótica uniportal (URATS)

From the Thoracic Surgery Service of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, specialised training in robotic surgery using a uniportal technique has been initiated for international professionals. These training sessions, baptized as “immersions” by Dr Ricard Ramos, head of the Clínic’s Thoracic Surgery Service and barnaclínic+ surgeon, aim to share and expand the knowledge and advanced techniques practiced by the professionals of our thoracic surgery team.

FROM THE USA TO LEARN ABOUT URATS SURGERY

The first of these dives was attended by Dr Ardeshir Hakami-Kermani, a renowned thoracic surgeon from the renowned Mount Sinai in New York. Dr Hakami-Kermani’s main objective was to learn more about the URATS technique (uniportal robotic thoracic surgeries) and learn from the professionals on our team, references and pioneers in this type of intervention.

During his stay, which lasted two intense days, Dr Hakami-Kermani was able to witness live the performance of five robotic surgery interventions, all performed using the uniportal technique. These procedures, carried out by Dr Ramos himself, Dr Anna Ureña and the rest of the thoracic surgery team, were aimed at the treatment of patients with lung cancer and mediastinal tumour.

Reflecting on this first experience and the American surgeon’s request, Dr Ramos stated: “The uniportal technique is common in our service for the treatment of pulmonary and mediastinal neoplasms. Dr Hakami-Kermani’s request to know how we perform URATS robotic surgery motivated us to organise these two intensive days of interventions”, explained Dr Ramos.

WITH THE AIM OF EXPANDING KNOWLEDGE

The head of the Thoracic Surgery Service also pointed out that the Hospital Clínic’s intention is to continue with these trainings: Our intention is to carry out these surgical immersions for a small number of surgeons every two or three months”.

The Thoracic Surgery team of the Hospital Clínic Group, with these initiatives, not only reinforces its position as a reference in the surgical field, but also shows its commitment to sharing and expanding knowledge globally. The perspective is clear: to train more professionals with cutting-edge techniques, which will undoubtedly benefit patients around the world.
