WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF COLON AND RECTAL CANCER?

Most of the time there are no symptoms of colon and rectal cancer : it does not cause any discomfort until the disease is advanced. If you have blood in your stool, changes in bowel habits for more than six weeks, unexplained weight loss or tiredness, or persistent abdominal discomfort, you should see your doctor to have it checked.

WHAT DOES THE EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF COLON AND RECTUM CANCER CONSIST OF?

Early diagnosis of colon and rectal cancer consists of a series of tests for the early detection of possible premalignant lesions (polyps) in the large intestine. The process begins with a visit to the gastroenterologist, who will take a complete medical history, an anamnesis, ask about your family history and decide if genetic testing is needed to detect the risk of cancer. At a second visit, the colonoscopy will be performed or, if necessary, the corresponding genetic testing. Once the result of the colonoscopy is obtained, the last visit will be made. Depending on the results, the gastroenterologist will make a preventive recommendation for safety and follow-up or, if necessary, will indicate the next steps for treatment.

· 1st Visit - Medical history, anamnesis and background

· 2nd Visit - Colorectal cancer early diagnosis tests - Colonoscopy

· 3rd Visit - Preventive safety recommendation based on the results

*At the first visit, the gastroenterologist may recommend that genetic testing to detect the risk of cancer be done at another visit.

COLONOSCOP

Colonoscopy involves examining the lining of the large intestine (colon) using a thin, flexible tube through the anus. It allows the safe and accurate detection of premalignant lesions (polyps) and their removal, as well as the detection of possible colorectal cancer. The test is performed under anaesthesia, controlled by an anaesthesiology professional, which makes it painless. In addition, it is done on an outpatient basis and, 15 or 20 minutes after the colonoscopy, you can leave the Hospital and return home. Counting preparation and recovery, it takes between two and three hours (the test itself lasts about 15 minutes) and it is advisable to have a companion during and after the test.
