Full gender-affirming surgery is a process, a set of interventions that will be performed in several sessions. To undergo all transgender surgeries in a short period of time, the patient must make the decision together with medical professionals specialising in gender-affirming surgery, being aware of the risks and benefits of each procedure.

The process followed by a patient who must undergo full gender-affirming surgery may vary depending on different factors, including: the availability of the surgeon, the surgical schedule, the type of interventions that will be performed, and the recovery time between each procedure. However, in general, you can expect that the entire process may take several months.

Example of full gender-affirming surgery

1- Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a major gender-affirming surgery, requiring significant recovery time. After the intervention, a period of at least 6 to 8 weeks of initial recovery is needed.

2- Body feminisation

Body feminisation interventions, in general, can be performed during admission for vaginoplasty. Thus, the patient would be hospitalised for about 6 nights and would be discharged.

3- Facial feminisation

After a month, the patient would have to return for facial feminisation interventions, which would require 2-3 nights of hospitalisation. Facial feminisation can be a series of procedures that include: rhinoplasty, jaw reshaping, Adam's apple reduction, among others. Depending on the complexity of the procedures and each person's recovery, this process may take several weeks or months.

4- Vocal feminisation

The feminisation of the voice is achieved through an intervention known as glottoplasty. This, the last gender-affirming surgery, would generally be performed on an outpatient basis or with just 1 day of admission and 3-4 weeks after facial surgery. In this way, during these weeks the patient could begin to work on the speech therapy team's guidelines.
