First robot-assisted complex gynecological surgery led by the Hospital Clínic Group
Last October 31st, Dr. Berta Diaz-Feijoo and Dr. Aureli Torné, both professionals at Gynecology barnaclínic+, performed the first robot-assisted complex gynecological surgery of the Hospital Clínic Group of Barcelona. Dr. Diaz-Feijoo states in the video that “the race for robotic surgery has only just begun.”
ROBOT-ASSISTED ENDOMETRIAL CANCER SURGERY
This first robot-assisted gynecological surgery performed at the Clinic was carried out in the Optimus operating room, the safest room and one of the most advanced and modern facilities worldwide, with the Da Vinci Robot, the only robot suitable for this type of intervention. The patient was affected by an initialendometrial cancer and underwent surgical staging, a very common procedure in the Hospital Clínic, where every year over 60 surgeries of this type are performed.
BENEFITS OF GYNECOLOGICAL ROBOTIC SURGERY
The use of the Da Vinci robot for interventions in gynecology offers several benefits. Among the improvements of this type of surgery are its three-dimensional vision and the possibility to introduce robotic instruments into the patient’s abdomen with seven degrees of movement. These improvements offer greater precision, which means less post-operative pain and fewer complications, especially in complex gynecological surgeries. Since robotic surgery requires less incisions, there is almost no risk of bleeding. It provides a faster, easier recovery and a much shorter hospitalization time.
“Robotic surgery offers a series of improvements that allow greater precision in surgical intervention. Improvements that, although subtle, can make a difference.”
WHAT KIND OF SURGERIES BENEFIT FROM THE USE OF THE DA VINCI ROBOT?
All gynecological laparoscopic surgeries can be robot-assisted. However, gynecological robotic surgery offers greater benefits when dealing with complex surgical interventions, such as: radical hysterectomy surgery, endometrial cancer surgery, initial ovarian cancer or cervical cancer. It is of great assistance also for patients with obesity. In these cases, the robot facilitates the robot facilitates much the performance of the surgery thanks to the better visibility and precision of robotic movements.
“All gynecological laparoscopic surgeriescan be robot-assisted. However, gynecological robotic surgery offers greater benefits in complex interventions.”
