barnaclínic+ launches its new Podiatry Unit for the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of foot conditions
The feet are the foundation of our musculoskeletal system. They support our body weight, absorb the impact of every step and play a fundamental role in mobility and quality of life. However, many people live for years with foot pain, gait abnormalities or conditions such as ingrown toenails, fungal nail infections, plantar warts, bunions or plantar fasciitis without consulting a specialist. To provide comprehensive, specialised care, barnaclínic+ has launched its new Podiatry Unit in Barcelona, a dedicated service focused on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of foot conditions and disorders.
A specialised team dedicated to preventing, diagnosing and treating the most common foot conditions, improving gait and helping people walk without pain
The Unit is led by Daniel Zurita Pichel, a podiatrist specialising in clinical podiatry, biomechanics and sports podiatry, with extensive experience in the treatment of foot conditions and biomechanical gait and running analysis.
Much more than treating nails or calluses
Although many people associate podiatry with the treatment of calluses or ingrown toenails, the specialty covers a much broader range of conditions.
The new barnaclínic+ Podiatry Unit offers a comprehensive approach including chiropody, ingrown toenail treatment, treatment for fungal nail infections and plantar warts, nail reconstruction and nail re-education, silicone orthoses for toe deformities, biomechanical gait analysis, custom orthotics and sports podiatry.
In addition, the team diagnoses and treats other common conditions such as plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, Morton’s neuroma, diabetic foot, foot deformities and sports-related foot injuries.
A precise diagnosis to prevent injuries
One of the Unit’s key principles is identifying the underlying cause of the problem before starting any treatment. To achieve this, the team performs a comprehensive clinical assessment and, whenever indicated, a biomechanical gait analysis to evaluate how each person walks or runs. This assessment helps identify abnormalities that may increase the risk of injury or overload.
“It is important to understand how our bodies are built so that we can move and practise the sports we enjoy while minimising the risk of injury.”
Daniel Zurita, Podiatrist
This assessment is beneficial both for people experiencing foot pain and for those who want to prevent future problems, improve their sports performance or simply take better care of their feet.
Care tailored to every stage of life
Foot care needs change throughout life. During childhood, plantar warts and growth-related foot conditions are common. In adolescents and adults, problems such as ingrown toenails, fungal nail infections, plantar fasciitis and toe deformities become more frequent. In older adults, conditions such as diabetic foot, loss of plantar fat pad tissue and gait disorders require special attention.
For this reason, the Podiatry Unit tailors both diagnosis and treatment to each patient’s individual needs, always prioritising conservative treatment whenever it represents the best therapeutic option.
Sports podiatry integrated into a leading Sports Medicine Unit
The Unit also includes a dedicated Sports Podiatry service, integrated within the barnaclínic+ – Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Sports Medicine Unit.
This multidisciplinary collaboration allows patients to benefit from the expertise of specialists in sports medicine, orthopaedic surgery and traumatology, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and nutrition to help prevent injuries, optimise sports performance and support a safe return to activity.
Taking care of your feet means taking care of your whole body
Your feet support between three and four times your body weight with every step you take. As a result, even minor foot abnormalities can eventually affect the ankles, knees, hips and back.
For Daniel Zurita, prevention plays a key role:
“Your feet need to work, and it is important to understand their condition in order to minimise the risk of injury and maintain a good quality of life.”
