The Clínic Eye Training Center is born, a model of excellence in ophthalmological training

Clinic Eye Training Center

The Hospital Clínic group has just put into motion a new project: the Clínic Eye Training Center (CETC). As part of the new Ophthalmological Surgery area, in the Maternity facility, the CETC was made with the aim of creating a model of excellence in  ophthalmological training and developing innovation projects at the same time. It’s state-of-the-art training in surgery and it’s the first practical-training project in ophthalmology in a public center in Europe.

What is the Clínic Eye Training Center (CETC)?

In their facilities the CETC has a space dedicated to experimental and simulation eye-surgery, that is connected both physically and digitally to the new surgery area as well as the external consultants of the Instituto Clínic of Ophthalmology. They hope to be able to train close to 500 people per year in this new space, with graduate students of Medicine and Bioengineering, MIR doctors and ophthalmologists. “With this new center, our aim is to facilitate integral training in Ophthalmology. We were born with the clear vocation of training in different activities, both surgical and non-surgical”, explains Dr. Alfredo Adán, director of the Instituto Clínic of Ophthalmology and ophthalmologist at barnaclínic+.

New facilities and innovative technologies

The CETC has a training classroom and two laboratories. The first, known as Dry Lab, is a simulation laboratory that allows us to understand the different surgical and diagnostic platforms and, with it the students can acquire both basic and surgical skills. The second laboratory, called Wet Lab, is an experimental surgery space, where we carry out training related to cataract, retinal, corneal, glaucoma surgery and oculoplastic surgery.

These facilities, along with all the new surgery area, have a surface area of 1,000m². As well as the facilities of the Clínic Eye Training Center, the new area has four operating rooms that can manage close to 30 interventions per day. It also has the latest and most innovative technology, thanks to which it’s possible to carry out every type of operation. From refractive surgery thanks to a novel laser-system, cataract interventions with femtosecond laser technology, to intraocular implants with new material and designs, such as retina microincisional surgery, among many other innovations.

The fact that the training area and the surgery unit are next to each other allows the students to, as well as practice, see close-up some of the 40 ophthalmological operations that are carried out per day. There will also be intercommunication with external consultants, where more than 200 visits are carried out per day. For the construction of this new area, the Instituto Clínic of Ophthalmology has financing from the FEDER fund via the MOOMA project.

Solidarity training project

Thanks to the creation of this space, professional training will also be offered to Third World countries via the Learn for Sight cooperation program. Via this program, access to the training offer and the resources of the Hospital Clínic group will be facilitated to these specialists because, once they are trained, they can put into practice the knowledge and lessons acquired in their countries of origin.
