Valeriy’s story: A double hip operation to improve the quality of life of a patient with ankylosing spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is a disease that can present itself in many different ways, making it necessary to study each patient to decide the optimal treatment. Understanding individual problems helps to make decisions that improve the quality of life of some patients who nowadays do not have curative treatments. On some occasions this may require complex operations that not all centers are capable of handling. This was the case of Valeriy, a patient from Belarus with ankylosing spondylitis that had caused a complete stiffness of the entire spine.

An obstruction in the main artery of the heart of Mr. Gabriel Robles Flores caused him a ventricular dysfunction that had the risk of ending up generating malignant arrhythmias and causing him a sudden death. A fatal outcome that could be avoided with a defibrillator. The problem was that, in their hospital in Puebla (Mexico), they did not have the appropriate technology to be able to perform this intervention in a minimally invasive way. With this type of approach, the benefits obtained by the operation are maximized, while a faster complete recovery of the patient is achieved.
For this reason, Dr. Omar Gómez Monterrosas, his interventional cardiologist, advised him that the intervention would be carried out at the Grupo Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, where he himself had trained between 2013 and 2015 through a fellowship, a period of training for physicians who have already completed an internship or residency to specialize within medicine.

A few weeks ago, 58 year old Mr. Manuel Alvarado came from Puebla (Mexico) and was admitted to barnaclínic+. When he was diagnosed with an ischemic heart disease, he was told his best option was to come to Barcelona. His wife Mrs. Lupita Prosperi de Alvarado accompanied him in this journey. After his surgery and some rest, they took the opportunity to visit Barcelona and the Spanish coast. Together with their cardiologists, Drs. Omar Gómez Monterrosas and Manel Sabaté they told us their story.
