Donanemab, a new treatment for Alzheimer’s disease now available at barnaclínic+

Donanemab, tratamiento para el Alzheimer

barnaclínic+ is expanding its treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease with donanemab (Kisunla®), a new treatment for patients in the early stages of the disease. This monoclonal antibody targets build-ups of beta-amyloid protein in the brain and has been shown to slow the progression of cognitive and functional decline in certain patients. The availability of donanemab in Barcelona marks a new step forward in the management of Alzheimer’s disease and underlines the importance of early diagnosis. This medicine belongs to a new generation of therapies which, unlike treatments that mainly focus on relieving symptoms, aim to act on one of the biological processes involved in the disease.

Donanemab: a new treatment to slow Alzheimer’s disease

Donanemab, marketed as Kisunla®, is a monoclonal antibody directed against beta-amyloid protein, whose abnormal build-up in the brain is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.

The medicine recognises certain forms of this protein found in amyloid plaques and helps the immune system to clear them. In this way, it aims to slow the cognitive and functional decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease in selected patients.

Although donanemab does not cure the disease or restore lost cognitive abilities, clinical trials have shown that it can reduce the progression of decline in certain patients with early Alzheimer’s disease.

Authorised in the European Union since September 2025, donanemab offers a new option for treating Alzheimer’s disease in Spain, with a specific indication and a follow-up protocol that requires specialist medical supervision.

Which patients can benefit from donanemab?

Treatment with donanemab is indicated for certain adult patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease in whom the presence of beta-amyloid pathology has been confirmed.

However, not all patients with Alzheimer’s disease can receive this medicine. Its use requires an individual assessment to determine the stage of the disease, confirm the diagnosis and look into possible risk factors.

This may involve neuroimaging tests, biomarker studies, genetic testing and a neuropsychological assessment to establish the patient’s cognitive status.

Candidate selection also takes into account the ApoE genotype and other clinical and safety criteria established for this treatment.

In this context, early detection of Alzheimer’s symptoms becomes especially important, as it allows the diagnostic work-up to begin at a time when treatment options aimed at changing the course of the disease may still be available.

A new landscape in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease

The arrival of medicines such as donanemab is gradually transforming the way Alzheimer’s disease is treated. For years, drug options have focused mainly on managing symptoms and trying to preserve patients’ quality of life.

New treatments targeting beta-amyloid open up the possibility of acting on some of the biological mechanisms of the disease, although their benefits depend on each patient’s characteristics and on the stage of Alzheimer’s disease.

This shift reinforces the importance of recognising the first symptoms and making an early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as having specialist teams able to determine which patients can benefit from the new treatment options.

Alzheimer’s treatment with donanemab at barnaclínic+

The barnaclínic+ Memory and Cognitive Disorders Unit offers specialist care for neurodegenerative diseases, from the diagnosis and assessment of memory disorders to the selection and follow-up of the most suitable treatment for each patient.

With donanemab now available, barnaclínic+ is expanding the treatment options for certain patients with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, through a process that includes diagnostic confirmation, assessment of the eligibility criteria, and the clinical and imaging follow-up required during treatment.

Donanemab requires specific monitoring to detect possible side effects, including amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), which can cause swelling or bleeding in the brain. For this reason, careful patient selection and supervision by specialist professionals are essential.

People with a recent diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment or suspected Alzheimer’s disease can request a specialist assessment to find out whether they meet the criteria for this new treatment.
