In this article, we will review<strong> what the meniscus is<\/strong>, what a <strong data-start=\"679\" data-end=\"700\">meniscus tear<\/strong> involves, the main <strong data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"751\">symptoms of a torn meniscus<\/strong>, the different treatment options \u2014 from <strong data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"842\">conservative meniscus treatment<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"852\" data-end=\"892\">arthroscopic meniscus surgery<\/strong> \u2014 and the recovery times depending on each case.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"614\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"978\" data-end=\"1026\">Gavi\u2019s injury: tear of the medial meniscus<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1286\">In 2023, the medical report confirmed that Gavi had suffered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/traumatologia-deportiva\/en\/2025\/03\/19\/lateral-knee-ligament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1161\">complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee<\/strong><\/a>, along with an associated injury to the lateral meniscus. He underwent reconstructive surgery and was sidelined for over a year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1813\">Now, the player has suffered a <strong data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1361\">radial tear of the medial meniscus<\/strong> in the same knee. This is considered an independent injury, as this time the other meniscus has been damaged. A <strong data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1501\">torn medial meniscus<\/strong> can cause pain and inflammation and, if the tear is extensive, it may behave almost like a <strong data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1616\">total meniscectomy<\/strong>, increasing joint overload by up to 300%. This accelerates cartilage wear and raises the risk of early osteoarthritis, especially in footballers with genu varum (bow-legged alignment).<\/p>\n<div id=\"estoy-interesado\" class=\"destacat-site\">\n<blockquote>\n<h4><small>YOU MAY ALSO LIKE&#8230;<\/small><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/traumatologia-deportiva\/en\/2020\/11\/09\/ansu-fatis-meniscus-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Ansu Fati\u2019s meniscus injury: What happened and what are the treatment options?<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<h2 data-start=\"1820\" data-end=\"1861\">Parameniscitis: what it is and what it means<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"2211\">In Gavi\u2019s case, there was also evidence of <strong data-start=\"1902\" data-end=\"1928\">internal parameniscitis<\/strong>, which is inflammation of the peripheral area of the meniscus. This condition causes pain, reduced mobility, and affects the normal function of the knee. The <strong data-start=\"2091\" data-end=\"2139\">recovery time for parameniscitis<\/strong> varies, but it may be longer if combined with a significant meniscus tear.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/es\/cuadro-medico\/91\/sergi\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-595 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/traumatologia-deportiva\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/dr-sergi-sastre.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"114\" height=\"114\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4 data-start=\"1863\" data-end=\"2211\">\u201cA meniscus tear does not always require surgery, but when the medial meniscus is torn and persistent pain occurs, surgery may be the best option.\u201d<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/professionals\/91\/sergi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Sergi Sastre<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-start=\"2218\" data-end=\"2261\">Conservative vs. surgical treatment<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2263\" data-end=\"2522\">At first, a <strong data-start=\"2299\" data-end=\"2343\">conservative treatment for the torn meniscus<\/strong> was attempted, aiming to control inflammation, stabilize the knee, and avoid painful locking. However, when this was not effective, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/traumatologia-deportiva\/2021\/09\/30\/artroscopia-beneficios\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"2481\" data-end=\"2519\">arthroscopic meniscus surgery<\/strong><\/a> was performed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2957\">In general, when a radial tear affects the avascular zone of the meniscus, it cannot heal on its own, and a <strong data-start=\"2646\" data-end=\"2671\">partial meniscectomy<\/strong> (removal of the torn portion) is necessary. A <strong data-start=\"2710\" data-end=\"2733\">total meniscectomy<\/strong> is rarely performed nowadays, as it removes the entire meniscus and accelerates osteoarthritis. Whenever possible, surgeons prefer to repair the tissue with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/traumatologia-deportiva\/2016\/04\/01\/mathieu-lesion-menisco\/\"><strong data-start=\"2892\" data-end=\"2911\">meniscus suture<\/strong><\/a>, even though recovery takes longer.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4 data-start=\"2524\" data-end=\"2957\">\u201cConservative meniscus treatment can work in some cases, but for athletes like Gavi we usually opt for a meniscus suture to preserve the joint.\u201d<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/professionals\/91\/sergi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Sergi Sastre<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-start=\"2964\" data-end=\"2999\">Meniscus suture and recovery<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3001\" data-end=\"3405\">In Gavi\u2019s case, the final decision was a <strong data-start=\"3047\" data-end=\"3066\">meniscus suture<\/strong>. This procedure requires a slower recovery process: initially, no weight can be placed on the operated leg, and there is a higher risk of muscle atrophy. However, <strong data-start=\"3253\" data-end=\"3290\">meniscus suture recovery<\/strong> offers the best option to preserve the joint and prevent the long-term consequences of a complete meniscectomy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3407\" data-end=\"3594\">The initial medical report estimated <strong data-start=\"3440\" data-end=\"3483\">1\u20132 months of downtime for a meniscus tear<\/strong>, but after surgery this was extended to <strong data-start=\"3518\" data-end=\"3547\">4\u20135 months of recovery<\/strong>, reflecting the complexity of the injury.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3601\" data-end=\"3657\">After-effects and consequences of meniscus surgery<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3659\" data-end=\"4038\">The <strong data-start=\"3663\" data-end=\"3711\">after-effects of medial meniscus surgery<\/strong> depend on whether a meniscectomy or a suture is performed. In the first case, the <strong data-start=\"3798\" data-end=\"3842\">consequences of meniscus surgery<\/strong> include greater cartilage wear and a higher risk of early osteoarthritis. With suturing, although the <strong data-start=\"3935\" data-end=\"3975\">downtime for a meniscus tear<\/strong> is longer, the goal is to preserve the knee in the long term.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/es\/cuadro-medico\/91\/sergi\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-595 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/traumatologia-deportiva\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/dr-sergi-sastre.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"114\" height=\"114\" \/><\/a><\/h4>\n<h4 data-start=\"3659\" data-end=\"4038\">\u201cArthroscopic meniscus surgery can have consequences if tissue is removed; that\u2019s why, whenever possible, we prefer to repair the meniscus rather than remove it.\u201d<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/professionals\/91\/sergi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Sergi Sastre<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-start=\"4045\" data-end=\"4083\">When will Gavi return from his injury?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4085\" data-end=\"4486\">One of the most frequent questions is: <strong data-start=\"4125\" data-end=\"4162\">when will Gavi return from his injury?<\/strong> After undergoing <strong data-start=\"4173\" data-end=\"4213\">arthroscopic meniscus surgery<\/strong> and meniscus repair, the estimated recovery time is around <strong data-start=\"4271\" data-end=\"4292\">4\u20135 months<\/strong>. In other words, the answer to <strong data-start=\"4319\" data-end=\"4355\">how long until Gavi is back from injury<\/strong> depends on his progress, but it is expected that he will return to competition in the second half of the season.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4493\" data-end=\"4509\">Meniscus tear and meniscus suture: what we can learn from Gavi\u2019s case<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4511\" data-end=\"4842\">A <strong data-start=\"4514\" data-end=\"4535\">meniscus tear<\/strong>, whether of the medial or lateral meniscus, is a common injury in footballers and elite athletes.
