A few weeks ago, 58 year old Mr. Manuel Alvarado<\/strong> came from Puebla (Mexico) and was admitted to barnacl\u00ednic+<\/strong>. When he was diagnosed with an\u00a0ischemic heart disease<\/strong><\/a>, he was told his best option was to come to Barcelona. His wife Mrs. Lupita Prosperi de Alvarado<\/strong> accompanied him in this journey. After his surgery and some rest, they took the opportunity to visit Barcelona and the Spanish coast. Together with their cardiologists, Drs. Omar G\u00f3mez Monterrosas<\/strong> and\u00a0Manel Sabat\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> they told us their story.<\/p>\n

CARDIOPATHY DIAGNOSIS AND THE DECISION TO COME TO BARCELONA<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As we mentioned before Mr. Alvarado was diagnosed with an arterial problem<\/strong> spotted during a stress test<\/strong> at a routine checkup <\/strong>in Mexico. Still in Puebla, he met Dr. Omar G\u00f3mez Monterrosas <\/strong>who analyzed his case and diagnosed him with an ischemic heart disease<\/strong><\/a>. Given the complexity of his pathology, they decided to consult Dr.\u00a0Manel Sabat\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>, specialist in\u00a0interventional cardiology<\/strong> <\/a>at barnaclinic +<\/strong>. Mr. Alvarado’s problem in the heart arteries<\/strong> required functionality studies (physiology), which could only be performed with the high technology found in hospitals such as barnaclinic +<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After several videoconferences they concluded that the best option for the patient was to come to Barcelona. For the Alvarado family this came as a surprise and a concern. However, from the very first conference with Dr. Sabat\u00e9<\/strong>, they felt \u201cconfident, supported and guided,\u201d says Mrs. Prosperi. They had a whole family meeting and decided to come to barnacl\u00ednic+<\/strong> where, according to the patient’s wife: \u201cthere are the best technology and the best facilities and the best specialists\u201d.<\/p>\n

TRAVEL AND WELCOMING LOGISTICS<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After a smooth journey they settled in the\u00a0hospitalization room<\/strong><\/a>. All the logistics of the trip, transports and programmed treatment were carried out by our patient managers. As explained by Yaser Mohadr<\/strong><\/a>, a member of this team, their function is to create \u201ca link between the international patient<\/strong> and barnacl\u00ednic +<\/strong>\u201d. That is, they carry out all the procedures from their medical assessment til they’re admitted to the\u00a0hospitalization room<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once in the room, the first direct care contact is with the nursing team<\/strong><\/a>. Its fundamental role helps patients feel more secure, protected and informed, especially those who come from abroad. For Mr. Alvarado, the whole process was \u201cexcellent from the beginning\u201d and adds: \u201cWe were given so much attention, with great warmth and respect. We felt part of a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

THE INTERVENTION, “A GREAT SUCCESS”<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The intervention was carried out the day after admission and, as Dr. Sabat\u00e9<\/strong> states: \u201cEverything went well and was satisfactory\u201d. The aim of the intervention was to identify whether the artery obstruction<\/strong> suffered by Mr. Alvarado was severe or not, and whether it produced an\u00a0ischemia<\/strong><\/a>. Two techniques were employed: an image technique and a pressure guide<\/strong> technique; which measures the change in pressure in the obstruction. The outcome was positive and confirmed that the obstruction was not severe, so it was not necessary to place a device in the coronary artery (coronary stent).<\/p>\n

FOLLOW-UP IN MEXICO AND REMOTE MONITORING<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After the intervention, the patient was brought back to his room and was discharged the folowing day. From now on, the follow-up will be carried out by Dr. G\u00f3mez Monterrosas<\/strong> directly in Mexico. It is also possible to contact Dr. Sabat\u00e9<\/strong> via videoconference for remote monitoring.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Prosperi stated that once back in Mexico, she would “recommend everyone to go to barnacl\u00ednic”. Mr. Alvarado, for his part, says he is “recovered, very happy and very well” and is grateful to “the nurses, doctors, the room team, the stretcher-bearers… Everyone was very friendly and approachable.”<\/p>\n
