It is characterized by the presence of <strong>fibrosis (scars) in the liver<\/strong> that cause <strong>liver dysfunction<\/strong>. These scars appear when, due to the presence of a chronic injury or inflammation, the liver repairs itself, producing scar tissue. This type of tissue, different from the original, decompensates the liver function, producing <strong>cirrhosis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>CAUSES OF CIRRHOSIS\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As we have said, the <strong>cause of cirrhosis<\/strong> is prolonged <strong>liver damage<\/strong> caused by disease. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Metabolic diseases<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A common <strong>cause of cirrhosis<\/strong> are diseases related to the infiltration of fat within the liver, which we call <strong>hepatic steatosis<\/strong>. (For example, <strong>nonalcoholic fatty liver disease<\/strong> (NAFLD) and <strong>nonalcoholic steatohepatitis<\/strong> (NASH), among others.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Viral hepatitis<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another <strong>common cause of cirrhosis<\/strong> is a chronic infection with <strong>hepatitis B<\/strong> and \/ or <strong>hepatitis C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Alcohol consumption or alcoholism<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the best known causes is the continued or chronic consumption of alcohol. <strong>Alcoholic liver cirrhosis<\/strong> is one of the <strong>most common types of cirrhosis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>Autoimmune diseases<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally, the immune system can be a <strong>cause of cirrhosis<\/strong> when, due to the presence of an <strong>autoimmune disease<\/strong>, liver cells are attacked and destroyed.<\/p>\n<h2>TREATMENT OF CIRRHOSIS<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Treatment of liver cirrhosis<\/strong> depends on a number of factors. On the one hand, the <strong>cause of cirrhosis<\/strong> will largely define the type of treatment. On the other hand, the <strong>damage caused to the liver<\/strong> and its condition will also determine the type of treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of treatment is generally to slow the formation and progression of scar tissue, as well as to treat <strong>symptoms of cirrhosis<\/strong> resulting from <strong>liver dysfunction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the <strong>treatment for cirrhosis<\/strong> will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>In patients with cirrhosis due to viral hepatitis (hepatitis b or c)<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Antiviral treatments that reduce inflammation and reduce the amount and evolution of <strong>fibrosis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>In patients with cirrhosis due to alcohol consumption<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In cases of <strong>alcoholic liver cirrhosis<\/strong>, the main treatment is abstinence. With this measure, they tend to reduce inflammation and in some <strong>cases liver fibrosis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>In patients with cirrhosis due to steatohepatitis<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Faced with <strong>liver cirrhosis caused by a metabolic disease<\/strong> such as steatohepatitis, the initial treatment will be weight loss, alcohol withdrawal, and physical exercise.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>In patients with cirrhosis due to autoimmune diseases<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In those patients who suffer from this <strong>disease caused by their immune system<\/strong>, treatment in many cases will be based on steroids.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5>In patients with advanced cirrhosis<\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Patients with <strong>advanced liver cirrhosis<\/strong> should be carefully evaluated and monitored. When the time comes, it will be necessary to decide if they are a good candidate for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/hepatobilioancreatic-surgery-transplantation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>liver transplant<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>WHEN SHOULD A LIVER TRANSPLANTATION FOR CIRRHOSIS BE CONSIDERED?<\/h2>\n<p>In some cases, <strong>advanced cirrhosis<\/strong> can produce symptoms and complications that greatly affect the life of the patient or that can even lead to death. In these cases, the possibility of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/hepatobilioancreatic-surgery-transplantation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>liver transplant<\/strong><\/a> must be considered.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/hepatobilioancreatic-surgery-transplantation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>liver transplantation<\/strong><\/a> would be considered for those patients with <strong>advanced liver cirrhosis<\/strong> who develop complications such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4>Excess retention of fluids<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>Kidney failure<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>Hepatic encephalopathy<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>Digestive bleeding due to portal hypertension<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h4>Liver cancer<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"estoy-interesado\" class=\"destacat-site\">\n<h1 style=\"padding-left: 15px; padding-right: 15px; text-align: center;\" align=\"LEFT\"><span style=\"color: white;\">DO YOU WANT TO CONTACT\u00a0DR.
