The new<\/strong> Pain Unit<\/strong><\/a> was created to respond to the most complex cases of patients with all types of pain<\/strong>, who have been visited by other specialists, but whose treatments have failed or have not responded satisfactorily. \u201cWe are specialised in the most complex cases of persistent post-surgical pain<\/strong>, neuropathic pain<\/strong> and even cancer pain<\/strong>,\u201d continues Dr D\u00fcsteler, who focuses on how chronic pain<\/strong> affects multiple spheres of patients\u2019 lives, not only affecting its physical function, but also having repercussions on mental health and people\u2019s capacity for social relationships.<\/p>\n

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PAIN AND TYPES OF PATIENTS<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The most common chronic pain<\/strong> is musculoskeletal, which in turn can be divided into different types, such as bone pain<\/strong>, lumbar pain<\/strong><\/a> or cervical pain<\/strong>. Low back pain<\/strong><\/a>, which is usually located in the lower back, can sometimes radiate to the buttock area and even the leg. \u201cIn these cases, we must rule out that there is no root involvement due to a herniated disc,\u201d explains Dr D\u00fcrsteler, who adds that in this case the treatment is very different, with more targeted drugs and may even require interventional techniques like infiltrations in the back.<\/p>\n

The new<\/strong> Pain Unit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0will also be able to treat a wide variety of patients, such as those who have undergone an intervention or also those who have suffered trauma or accidents, for whom sequelae of lumbar<\/strong><\/a>, cervical<\/strong> or joint<\/strong> pain persist.<\/p>\n

WIDE VARIETY OF PAIN TREATMENTS<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The new Unit has different types of pain treatment<\/strong>, which adapt to the needs of each patient. These include neuromodulation treatments<\/strong>, which include intrathecal drug administration\u2014a special way of giving medications that is used when they need to reach the brain or spinal cord directly\u2014or electrical stimulation<\/strong>. \u201cThese therapies offer the best alternative to at least partially relieve patients\u2019 chronic pain,\u201d continues Dr Christian D\u00fcrsteler<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Likewise, regenerative medicine techniques<\/strong> will also be available in the new unit. \u201cWe are talking about products that are prepared after drawing the patient\u2019s blood and from which multiple products can be prepared to infiltrate directly into joints or tendons or around nerves,\u201d says Dr Guilherme Ferreira dos Santos<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also have multiple percutaneous techniques<\/strong>, we talk about different types of radiofrequencies or<\/strong> rhizolysis techniques<\/strong> that we use, for example, in problems related to chronic lumbar pain<\/strong><\/a>, chronic cervical pain<\/strong> or chronic radicular pain<\/strong>, that is, such as sciatica, for example\u201d, continues Dr Ferreira dos Santos. They are minimally invasive techniques that use small needles to treat pinched nerve problems. \u201cIn terms of results, these techniques allow us to prolong the pain reduction<\/strong> effect when we compare, for example, with infiltrations without the addition of rhizolysis or radiofrequency,\u201d continues the expert.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition to classic pharmacological therapies<\/strong> or interventional techniques<\/strong>, we also offer a Comprehensive Care program for Patients with Chronic Pain<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d adds Dr D\u00fcrsteler. This program consists of a series of group sessions in which we empower the patient to self-manage their pain, emphasising therapeutic education, psychological support, mindfulness techniques, education in the neurosciences of pain, physical medicine and rehabilitation<\/a> and in directed physical exercise.<\/p>\n
