{"id":4506,"date":"2023-07-21T16:17:54","date_gmt":"2023-07-21T16:17:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/?p=4506"},"modified":"2025-04-15T15:02:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T15:02:56","slug":"deep-brain-stimulation-schizophrenia-and-bipolar-disorder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/en\/blog\/deep-brain-stimulation-schizophrenia-and-bipolar-disorder\/","title":{"rendered":"Study demonstrates the usefulness of deep brain stimulation for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An article that has recently been published in the <em>Journal of Psychiatry and Mental Health<\/em>,<a name=\"_ednref1\"><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/blog\/estimulacion-cerebral-profunda-para-esquizofrenia-trastorno-bipolar\/#_edn1\">[1]<\/a> in which various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/professionals\/\">barnacl\u00ednic+ professionals<\/a> have participated, has shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/neurosurgery\/deep-brain-stimulation\/\"><strong>deep brain stimulation<\/strong><\/a>, a surgical procedure that involves the placement of a device called a neurostimulator that sends electrical impulses to specific areas of the brain, it can be a safe and effective alternative for complex cases of patients with <strong>schizophrenia<\/strong> and <strong>bipolar disorder<\/strong> who do not respond to usual therapies.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This type of procedure has been used around the world to treat different brain pathologies, mainly for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/neurology\/epilepsy\/\">epilepsy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/movement-disorders\/\">movement disorders<\/a>, such as Parkinson\u2019s disease. In fact, the Hospital Cl\u00ednic has had a Functional Neurosurgery program for more than 20 years where this technique has been used since its inception and its effectiveness has been investigated. The experience gained through this program raised the possibility that <strong>patients with depression or obsessive-compulsive disorders<\/strong>, who do not respond to treatments, could also benefit from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/neurosurgery\/deep-brain-stimulation\/\"><strong>deep brain stimulation<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FHKgGtvmVKw\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION, FOR THOSE CASES THAT DO NOT RESPONSE TO USUAL TREATMENT<\/h2>\n<p>The importance of this study also lies in the unmet needs of a good part of the population. We must not forget that about 30% of people with schizophrenia and 15% of those with bipolar disorder fit this profile in which they do not respond to the usual pharmacological treatment, and that they currently do not have alternatives that help them manage their illness. That is why a pilot program was launched to evaluate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/neurosurgery\/deep-brain-stimulation\/\"><strong>effects of deep brain stimulation<\/strong><\/a> as a therapeutic strategy. The work, led by <strong>Miquel Bioque<\/strong>, an accredited researcher from the IDIBAPS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clinicbarcelona.org\/idibaps\/areas-de-investigacion\/neurociencias-clinicas-y-experimentales\/esquizofrenia?_gl=1*8c0hjt*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTAxNDY1NDAyLjE2ODgzOTYwNDI.*_ga_R4X4292K2Y*MTY4ODM5NjA0Mi4xLjEuMTY4ODM5NjEwNy4wLjAuMA..\">Schizophrenia<\/a> group, directed by <strong>Miguel Bernardo<\/strong>, involved four patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder resistant to treatment and was recently published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.es\/es-revista-revista-psiquiatria-salud-mental--286-resumen-deep-brain-stimulation-and-digital-S1888989123000137\">Spanish Journal of Psychiatry and Mental Helth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4>About 30% of people with schizophrenia and 15% of those with bipolar disorder do not respond to standard drug treatment and currently have no alternatives.<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X8_fZee45jg\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2><strong>A PERSONALISED STUDY<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe electrodes were placed in different areas of the brain according to the symptoms, affective or psychotic, that each case presented and its evolution. The app collected mood symptoms, while the device recorded physical activity and sleep patterns. After this time, a notable and stable therapeutic response was observed in two of the four patients. The third showed a relevant relief of clinical symptoms. On the other hand, the fourth did not respond significantly. Therefore, it was possible to interrupt the <strong>maintenance electroconvulsive therapy<\/strong> sessions in the three responding cases. The good results also made it possible to reduce part of the pharmacological treatment.<\/p>\n<p>For researchers, the finding constitutes initial evidence that the technique can be an effective and safe alternative to <strong>treat complex and treatment-resistant forms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder<\/strong>. \u201cThis opens the door and gives hope for a particularly complex group of patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder\u201d, says Dr Vieta.
