The New\u00a0<\/strong>barnaclinic+\u00a0Paediatric\u00a0FASD\u00a0Unit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(UneSAF)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0offers\u00a0<\/strong>diagnosis\u00a0and<\/strong>\u00a0follow<\/strong>-up<\/strong>\u00a0for children<\/strong>\u00a0affected\u00a0by\u00a0Foetal\u00a0Alcohol\u00a0Spectrum\u00a0Disorders<\/strong>.<\/strong> Made up of a\u00a0multidisciplinary<\/strong>\u00a0team<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0leading<\/strong>\u00a0experts<\/strong>,\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0national<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0international\u00a0level<\/strong>,\u00a0with\u00a0over\u00a015 years\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0experience<\/strong>\u00a0in FASD-related treatment, teaching and research.\u00a0Furthermore, it is the only Unit in the country to specialise in this disease and offer diagnosis\u00a0and\u00a0psychological<\/strong>\u00a0(cognitive-behavioural), speech therapy and educational treatment, among others.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

WHAT ARE FOETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDERS (FASD)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Foetal<\/strong>\u00a0Alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0Spectrum<\/strong>\u00a0Disorders<\/strong>\u00a0(FASD ) are a group of different physical, mental, behavioural and cognitive disorders which an individual may present if\u00a0<\/em>exposed to<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>during<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>antenatal<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>development<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Alcohol affects the development of the nervous system during pregnancy, and may also damage other developing organs.\u00a0FASD is an umbrella term for various clinical forms of this disease: full and partial\u00a0Foetal<\/strong>\u00a0Alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0Syndrome <\/strong>(FAS),\u00a0Alcohol-<\/strong>\u00a0Related Birth Defects<\/strong>\u00a0(ARBD) and\/or\u00a0Alcohol<\/strong>–Related<\/strong>\u00a0Neurodevelopmental<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Disorder<\/strong>\u00a0(ARND).<\/p>\n

The most serious form of FASD is\u00a0full\u00a0Foetal<\/strong>\u00a0Alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0Syndrome<\/strong>\u00a0(FAS), and its clinical manifestations range from morphological malformations, to growth impairment and central nervous system disorders, expressed as cognitive, behavioural, socialisation and learning disorders.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

What are the causes of FASD?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

As we have already mentioned, the\u00a0consumption of alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0during<\/strong>\u00a0pregnancy<\/strong>\u00a0may<\/strong>\u00a0give\u00a0rise\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0broad\u00a0spectrum\u00a0of\u00a0adverse\u00a0effects\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0developing\u00a0foetus<\/strong>. Antenatal<\/strong>\u00a0exposure<\/strong>\u00a0to<\/strong>\u00a0alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0gives rise to a\u00a0dysfunction<\/strong>\u00a0in the<\/strong>\u00a0Central<\/strong>\u00a0Nervous System<\/strong>\u00a0(CNS) owing to structural and functional brain damage. These structural alterations can be seen through Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and the most common are: microcephaly; decrease in the volume of white and grey matter; malformation or agenesis of the corpus callosum; decrease in the volume of the caudate nucleus, the hippocampus or the frontal, temporal or parietal lobes.<\/p>\n

The severity of damage owing to\u00a0antenatal<\/strong>\u00a0alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0exposure<\/strong>\u00a0depends, principally, on the dose consumed, the time and pattern of consumption, as well as the individual\u2019s genetic susceptibility.<\/p>\n

Consequences<\/strong>\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0FASD<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The term\u00a0Foetal<\/strong>\u00a0Alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0Spectrum<\/strong>\u00a0Disorders<\/strong>\u00a0merely describes a series of clinical alterations which allow us to diagnose the damage produced by\u00a0antenatal<\/strong>\u00a0alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0impairment<\/strong>; however, there is no specific treatment for it as it is a syndromic symptom.<\/p>\n

Some of the most common alterations in children with FASD are: impaired working memory, emotional management problems and theory-of-mind deficits. At a clinical level, these difficulties may take the form of:\u00a0Attention<\/strong>\u00a0Deficit<\/strong>\u00a0Hyperactivity<\/strong>\u00a0Disorder (ADHD)<\/strong>,\u00a0learning<\/strong>\u00a0difficulties<\/strong>,\u00a0mental<\/strong>\u00a0retardation<\/strong>, literacy problems, behavioural disorders, etc.<\/p>\n

THE NEW BARNACL\u00cdNIC+ FASD UNIT<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0new\u00a0<\/strong>b<\/strong>arnacl\u00ednic+<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>FASD\u00a0Unit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0offers diagnosis and follow-up for such cases. A group of professionals from different disciplines,\u00a0leading experts on an international level<\/strong>,\u00a0and with\u00a0over 15 years\u2019 experience<\/strong>, visit these patients and establish a personalised follow-up programme for each case.<\/p>\n

Diagnosis of FASD<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In the\u00a0FASD<\/strong>\u00a0Unit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(UneSAF)<\/strong>, diagnosis is made by a multidisciplinary team, made up principally of psychologists and paediatricians. Experience acquired in clinical practice and research enables them to offer a precise diagnosis, based on internationally established clinical criteria. The FASD Unit also has specific expert material for diagnosis and follow-up, including clinical guidelines for parents and schools and an app for clinical diagnosis, among others.<\/p>\n

Treatment of FASD<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The\u00a0barnacl\u00ednic+<\/strong>\u00a0FASD<\/strong>\u00a0Unit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0offers patients comprehensive follow-up, incorporating different disciplines, and which is conducted by means of various types of visit: pre-adoptive, post-adoptive, diagnostic, follow-up, case study and for coordination with professionals and resources.<\/p>\n

The treatment of the associated symptoms is also conducted in a multidisciplinary manner, and is of a\u00a0psychological,<\/strong>\u00a0speech therapy, educational, cognitive-behavioural<\/strong>\u00a0and, highly exceptionally, pharmacological nature.<\/p>\n
