{"id":1140,"date":"2018-10-18T11:39:49","date_gmt":"2018-10-18T11:39:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/en\/blog\/nueva-unidad-de-teaf\/"},"modified":"2018-12-19T14:46:51","modified_gmt":"2018-12-19T14:46:51","slug":"foetal-alcohol-spectrum-disorders-unit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/blog\/en\/blog\/foetal-alcohol-spectrum-disorders-unit\/","title":{"rendered":"New Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Unit, diagnosis and multi-disciplinary follow-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/fasd-unit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>barnaclinic+\u00a0Paediatric\u00a0FASD\u00a0Unit<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/es\/especialidades\/20\/pediatria\"><strong>(UneSAF)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<strong>offers\u00a0<\/strong><strong>diagnosis\u00a0and<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>follow<\/strong><strong>-up<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>for children<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>affected\u00a0by\u00a0Foetal\u00a0Alcohol\u00a0Spectrum\u00a0Disorders<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Made up of a\u00a0<strong>multidisciplinary<\/strong><strong>\u00a0team<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<strong>leading<\/strong><strong>\u00a0experts<\/strong>,\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0<strong>national<\/strong><strong>\u00a0and\u00a0international\u00a0level<\/strong>,\u00a0with\u00a0over\u00a0<strong>15 years\u2019<\/strong><strong>\u00a0experience<\/strong>\u00a0in FASD-related treatment, teaching and research.\u00a0Furthermore, it is the only Unit in the country to specialise in this disease and offer diagnosis\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>psychological<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>(cognitive-behavioural), speech therapy and educational treatment, among others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>WHAT ARE FOETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDERS (FASD)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Foetal<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Spectrum<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Disorders<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>FASD ) are a group of different physical, mental, behavioural and cognitive disorders which an individual may present if\u00a0<\/em><strong>exposed to<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>alcohol<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>during<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>antenatal<\/strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>development<\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Alcohol affects the development of the nervous system during pregnancy, and may also damage other developing organs.\u00a0FASD is an umbrella term for various clinical forms of this disease: full and partial\u00a0<strong>Foetal<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Syndrome <\/strong>(FAS),\u00a0<strong>Alcohol-<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Related Birth Defects<\/strong>\u00a0(ARBD) and\/or\u00a0<strong>Alcohol<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Related<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Neurodevelopmental<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Disorder<\/strong>\u00a0(ARND).<\/p>\n<p>The most serious form of FASD is\u00a0full\u00a0<strong>Foetal<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Syndrome<\/strong>\u00a0(FAS), and its clinical manifestations range from morphological malformations, to growth impairment and central nervous system disorders, expressed as cognitive, behavioural, socialisation and learning disorders.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>What are the causes of FASD?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As we have already mentioned, the\u00a0<strong>consumption of alcohol<\/strong><strong>\u00a0during<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>pregnancy<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>may<\/strong><strong>\u00a0give\u00a0rise\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0broad\u00a0spectrum\u00a0of\u00a0adverse\u00a0effects\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0developing\u00a0foetus<\/strong>. <strong>Antenatal<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>exposure<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>to<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0gives rise to a\u00a0<strong>dysfunction<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>in the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Central<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Nervous System<\/strong>\u00a0(CNS) owing to structural and functional brain damage. These structural alterations can be seen through Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and the most common are: microcephaly; decrease in the volume of white and grey matter; malformation or agenesis of the corpus callosum; decrease in the volume of the caudate nucleus, the hippocampus or the frontal, temporal or parietal lobes.<\/p>\n<p>The severity of damage owing to\u00a0<strong>antenatal<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>exposure<\/strong>\u00a0depends, principally, on the dose consumed, the time and pattern of consumption, as well as the individual\u2019s genetic susceptibility.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Consequences<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>of<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>FASD<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The term\u00a0<strong>Foetal<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Spectrum<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Disorders<\/strong>\u00a0merely describes a series of clinical alterations which allow us to diagnose the damage produced by\u00a0<strong>antenatal<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>alcohol<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>impairment<\/strong>; however, there is no specific treatment for it as it is a syndromic symptom.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the most common alterations in children with FASD are: impaired working memory, emotional management problems and theory-of-mind deficits. At a clinical level, these difficulties may take the form of:\u00a0<strong>Attention<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Deficit<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Hyperactivity<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Disorder (ADHD)<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>learning<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>difficulties<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>mental<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>retardation<\/strong>, literacy problems, behavioural disorders, etc.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>THE NEW BARNACL\u00cdNIC+ FASD UNIT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/fasd-unit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The\u00a0<strong>new\u00a0<\/strong><strong>b<\/strong><strong>arnacl\u00ednic+<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>FASD\u00a0Unit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0offers diagnosis and follow-up for such cases. A group of professionals from different disciplines,\u00a0<strong>leading experts on an international level<\/strong>,\u00a0and with\u00a0<strong>over 15 years\u2019 experience<\/strong>, visit these patients and establish a personalised follow-up programme for each case.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Diagnosis of FASD<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnaclinic.com\/en\/fasd-unit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>FASD<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Unit<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0(UneSAF)<\/strong>, diagnosis is made by a multidisciplinary team, made up principally of psychologists and paediatricians. Experience acquired in clinical practice and research enables them to offer a precise diagnosis, based on internationally established clinical criteria.
