What is Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery?

Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery is a range of surgical techniques that allow access to the brain, the skull base and the spine, with minimal harm to the patient. Minimally invasive neurosurgery was initially developed as a minimally aggressive and invasive approach to treating complex brain tumours.

HOW IS MINIMALLY INVASIVE NEUROSURGERY PERFORMED?

Minimally invasive neurosurgery techniques make use of natural orifices, such as the nostrils, to access lesions and/or, as we have already mentioned, complex brain tumours. By accessing the lesion through a natural orifice, there is no need for an incision and the patient will bear no scar after the procedure. In short, the absence of scarring, in addition to its aesthetic benefit, will limit complications and help patient recovery.

IS MINIMALLY INVASIVE NEUROSURGERY ALWAYS SCAR FREE?

For some complex brain tumours, access through the nose is not possible. On these occasions, thanks to the latest advances in technology, our neurosurgeons make very small incisions and access the brain tumour directly. Using microsurgical techniques, large resections are performed with a level of disturbance similar to that obtained with access via natural orifices.

BENEFITS OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE NEUROSURGERY

The benefits of minimally invasive neurosurgery over conventional surgical techniques include a much shorter postoperative period, an improved aesthetic outcome and increased levels of comfort. After surgery of this type, the patient can be discharged earlier and experiences much less discomfort than in a normal postoperative period.

It was interesting to learn the benefits of minimally invasive surgery. My cousin is thinking that she might need a neurosurgeon. Getting a professional to help her would be really reassuring.

I like that you said that one of the benefits of minimally invasive neurosurgery is that there is an increased level of comfort afterward. My daughter has been telling me that she has a lot of headaches and we’re thinking about taking her to a doctor. After reading this article, I think it’s best we take her to a neurosurgeon.
