Nine services of the Clínic are among the best in the world in the ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals’ of 2023
Newsweek magazine in collaboration with the statistical portal Statista Inc. publishes each year a ranking of the best hospitals in the world by speciality, the ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals 2023’. As usual, the Barcelona Clínic Group has stood out as one of the best hospitals in the world and our country, and has achieved outstanding positions in nine of the eleven categories that were analysed this year. The best-positioned department was Urology, led by Dr Antonio Alcaraz, who was also a novelty in this edition’s ranking. In this way, the Clinical Institute of Nephrology and Urology (ICNU) has achieved the 14th position in the ranking, also being the second-best service in Spain, only behind the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid.

Femoroplasty, a pioneering innovation to settle problems with a hip-prosthetic
Hospital Clínic is a pioneer in Spain in the use of femoroplasty, an innovative technique in which sanitary cement is injected around the hip-prosthetic, inside the femur, to recover stability and so achieve an improvement in pain and recover the patient’s mobility. Dr. Jenaro Fernández-Valencia, head of the Hip Section of the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Surgery Service at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and professional at barnaclínic+, is one of the people in charge of the design of the protocol and introduction of this technique.

Robotic knee replacement surgery achieves greater precision and customisation
New equipment acquired by the Hospital Clínic Group allows for both early planning that is more adapted to each specific case, as well as assistance during surgery to improve its precision and accuracy. Thanks to this increased customisation and precision, patient recovery is better and faster and the knee prosthesis is also more durable.

Dr. Fernández-Valencia performs hip replacement surgery without hospitalisation for the first time in Spain
Hospital Clínic de Barcelona has performed, for the first time in Spain, a hip replacement surgery without the need for hospitalisation. Although in recent years it had been possible to cut the hospitalisation time in half (from 7 days to 3.5 days), the operation had not been possible without hospitalising the patient. The intervention was carried out by Dr. Jenaro Fernández-Valencia, from the Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology Service and Head of the Hip Section of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and barnaclínic+. The patient was operated on more than 2 months ago (on July 7th) and has not presented any complications. Read more…

Dr. Sergi Sastre repairs a cartilage lesion with BST-CarGel, a new treatment
On Friday 22 January, Dr. Sergi Sastre , a specialist surgeon in Sports Traumatology of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and Barnaclínic+, repaired a cartilage lesion by arthroscopy with BST-CarGel® . This is a new treatment which has had its excellent results published in an international study that involved the Hospital Clínic’s Knee Unit.
