    Nine services of the Clínic are among the best in the world in the ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals’ of 2023

    Newsweek magazine in collaboration with the statistical portal Statista Inc. publishes each year a ranking of the best hospitals in the world by speciality, the ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals 2023’. As usual, the Barcelona Clínic Group has stood out as one of the best hospitals in the world and our country, and has achieved outstanding positions in nine of the eleven categories that were analysed this year. The best-positioned department was Urology, led by Dr Antonio Alcaraz, who was also a novelty in this edition’s ranking. In this way, the Clinical Institute of Nephrology and Urology (ICNU) has achieved the 14th position in the ranking, also being the second-best service in Spain, only behind the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid.

    The CAR-T ARI-0001 developed by the Hospital Clínic obtains the PRIME designation from the European Medicines Agency

    ARI-0001 is a CAR-T therapy that has been developed at Hospital Clínic for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. In February 2021, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) approved its use and it became the first treatment with genetically modified cells and fully developed in Europe that was approved by a regulatory agency. The path of ARI-0001 has not stopped here, and now the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has granted it the PRIME designation, which means that it has become a priority for the agency thus offering its support for an evaluation acceleration of this therapy.

    Liquid biopsy shows its utility in the analysis of cancer

    One of the big challenges in the treatment of cancer is its heterogeneity. Tumours can present different mutations and change with time, which means that not all treatments are effective or they generate resistance. That’s why it is important to carry out follow-ups that allow us to identify changes as they are produced. However, getting the precise samples to carry out this analysis via a tissue biopsy isn’t always easy. That’s why, in the last few years, a new method has been developed which allows to analyse tumoural DNA circulating in the blood in order to carry out this follow-up and analysis of cancer in an easy and simple way. This is known as liquid biopsy.

    Seven services of the Clínic among the best in the world in the ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals’ from Newsweek magazine

    Once again Newsweek magazine has made their ranking of the best hospitals in the world by speciality, the ‘World’s Best Specialised Hospitals’ and the Hospital Clínic Group Barcelona has played an important role in it. The ranking from this year 2022 has for the first time widened the number of specialities analysed from seven to ten, and the Hospital Clínic Group has managed to have some of their services in up to seven of these categories.

    The AEMPS approves the use of a CAR-T therapy developed by the Hospital Clínic Group for the treatment of a type of leukaemia

    In recent years, cancer treatment has been revolutionised by immunotherapy, an approach that uses a patient’s own immune system to attack tumour cells. The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) has just approved ARI-0001, a CAR T-cell therapy (a type of immunotherapy) developed entirely by the Hospital Clínic Group, for use as a medicinal product. This is the first time that a treatment with genetically modified cells developed entirely in Europe has been approved by a regulatory agency, and it is also the first time that it has been done without the backing of a pharmaceutical company.

    A new molecular test detects genetic abnormalities in tumours and improves customised cancer diagnosis and treatment

    At the Grupo Hospital Clínic, we have a new option for diagnosis of advanced cancer. It is a new test using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology which, by analysing the tumour’s DNA and RNA, detects multiple genetic abnormalities in 52 of your genes. This new cancer diagnostic test allows your treatment to be further customised. In addition, it improves current tests for the diagnosis of lung, colon and rectal cancer and melanoma.

    The Hospital Clínic Group of Barcelona has had three of its Institutes included in the ‘World’s Best Specialized Hospitals‘; a classification that recognizes the best hospitals in the world by speciality. The Clinical Cardiovascular Institute (ICCV), led by Dr. Marta Sitges, the Clinical Institute of Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (ICMDM), directed by Dr. Josep Vidal, and the Institute of Hemato-oncological Diseases (ICMHO), with Dr. Álvaro Urbano-Ispizua at the helm, are among the best in the world in their respective specialities according to the list produced annually by Newsweek magazine.
